AETHUS Negative Vitality Effects Explained: Settings and Penalties

Negative vitality effects in AETHUS add severe survival penalties, including character death, whenever your nutrition or hydration meters run empty. By default, this modifier is toggled off, meaning neglected meters simply remove positive buffs rather than killing Maeve.

How the Vitality System Works by Default

In standard gameplay, vitality in AETHUS consists of nutrition, hydration, and stamina meters alongside Maeve's suit oxygen and health bars. When you keep nutrition and hydration full, the game rewards you with positive stat bonuses. Maintaining the well-fed buff increases your maximum carry weight by 30 percent, raising base inventory carrying capacity from 60 units up to 78 units.

Under default settings, depleting your nutrition or thirst meters does not drain Maeve's health pool. Running out of food or water simply strips away active perks such as bonus carrying capacity. Solo developer Pawsmonaut Games configured the standard experience so that oxygen depletion underground serves as the primary environmental pressure, keeping exploration relaxed for those selecting the best difficulty balance for story progression.

Enabling the Negative Vitality Effects Modifier

Players who want authentic survival friction can toggle Enable Negative Vitality Effects in the Game Modifiers menu. The in-game modifier description confirms that this setting causes neglected vitality meters to inflict damage and character death when completely ignored.

You can change this option at the start of a playthrough or directly from the settings menu at any time during active play. Settings in AETHUS save on a per-slot basis rather than globally across the installation. If you find extended subterranean expeditions too punishing, you can open the pause menu and turn the modifier off without restarting your save.

Restoring Nutrition and Hydration

Maintaining vitality meters requires gathering food and water across surface biomes and underground caverns. Early in the game, harvest wild cactus fruit to restore nutrition, stamina, and small amounts of hydration. Consuming raw cactus fruit restores five points of nutrition and five points of energy.

Setting up a scrap grill in your outpost allows you to cook basic ingredients using recipes stored in your blueprint menu. Combining cactus fruit with harvested biomass at the grill produces grilled cactus fruit, which supplies seven points of energy and seven points of nutrition. Preparing hot meals serves as the primary method to keep the well-fed bonus active, providing the best food value during early base development. Certain underground flora, such as glow tus fruit, is toxic to consume directly, though its seeds can later be placed inside a hydroponic bed for controlled cultivation.

Purifying water requires scanning sources before drinking. Early scans at surface locations like the surface oasis reveal high levels of organic compounds, requiring you to construct purification equipment such as dew catchers rather than drinking directly from standing pools.

Vitality Balance Changes and Outpost Reductions

Several updates adjusted vitality drain rates to prevent survival maintenance from overtaking exploration. Hotfix 13 reduced the base speed at which vitality stats degrade across the board by approximately 50 percent. When Maeve remains inside the boundary of the surface outpost, vitality stats degrade an additional 50 percent slower, giving you ample time to build structures, refine ores, and arrange storage containers.

Sleep also interacts directly with your vitality bars. Using a bed inside a makeshift habitat advances the in-game clock to a chosen hour and saves progress. Hotfix 10 adjusted rest metrics, setting the awake duration before tiredness occurs to 100 minutes of real time. Longer sleep cycles restore full stamina but slowly consume stored nutrition and hydration, making it advisable to keep cooked meals stored near your sleeping quarters.
